Dexter City Park
Dexter

Population: 2,338
Location: about 9 miles northwest of Ann Arbor, with easy access to I-94.
County: Washtenaw

Profile
Though built on a grand scale to rival Washtenaw County's other early settlements, Dexter never grew beyond a small village. Surrounding areas offer all the modern amenities, but the village zealously preserves its historic center. A dam on Mill Creek, a block south of the historic downtown circle, adds a picturesque touch. Community celebrations include Dexter Daze in August and Apple Daze in October.

Local History
Dexter was named after Judge Samuel Dexter, who first purchased land here in 1824. Shortly afterward, Dr. Cyril Nichols and Samuel Foster settled here, bringing some permanence to the young community. Two years later, Judge Dexter became the first postmaster. The town incorporated as a village in 1855.
