Manchester
Population: 2,160
Location: 19 miles southeast of Jackson, 16 miles southwest of Ann Arbor.
County: Washtenaw
Profile
This picturesque hill town overlooks a dam and bridge on the River Raisin The most self-contained and rural of Washtenaw County's small towns, Manchester retains much of its early Main Street architecture. Attractive buildings include an old mill, a fieldstone Catholic church and several historic homes. The gently rolling countryside resembles the Irish Hills, just to the southwest.
Local History
Manchester was named for a township in Ontario County, New York, where many of the first settlers originated. A Major John Gilbert visited the region in 1833, obtained a grant of 400 acres, platted and surveyed the area. Later that year, James Harvey Fargo and his uncle Steven Fargo built the Manchester Mill Company. It was eventually incorporated as a village in 1867.
