Local History
Manitou is an Indian word meaning great spirit, either good or evil. According to legend, a family tragedy earned Devil's Lake its name. Despite being a strong swimmer, the daughter of Pottawatomie Chief Meteau drowned in the lake. Her body was never recovered, and the Chief believed that evil spirits had stolen her.
Geneva is considered the first permanent settlement on Devil's Lake and Round Lake. During the late 1800s the region was a center for lumber and shingles, but by the 1930s it had become better known as a resort area.
