What's in a name? The city's unusual name comes in part from two Anns, the wives of founders John Allen and Elisha Rumsey. But what was their “arbor”? Some say it was a wild grape arbor where the women sat with their knitting and mending. Others claim the great burr oaks and lush greenery of the region inspired the name. At any rate, on May 25, 1824, the Wayne County Register of Deeds shows the first record of the name “Annarbour.”
